September 12, Remembrance Mural to be Installed

Dear OHS parents and students:

Students from the 2022-23 school year have been working on the remembrance efforts of Justin, Hana, Tate, and Madisyn in the high school along with some of our high school staff members including the District Recovery Coordinator. The student group decided to have a 4 ft by 6 ft symbolic mural painted on canvas and created by muralist, Zach Curtis.  The mural will be hung on the brick wall leading into the OHS cafeteria across from the media center. On behalf of these students, we are honored to announce that the artist has finished the Remembrance Mural and scheduled to be installed at the end of this week.  We wanted our OHS students and families to be informed before our whole school community. This news will be shared in a communication with all of our district families and staff tomorrow.

The symbolic imaging the student group and the artist had decided on for the mural are reflective of drawings with which you may already be familiar. The canvas has been painted to resemble a cork board with pinned up items including images from each of the shirts that were designed in memory of the students last year: Hana’s Tree, Madisyn’s gum wrapper drawing, Justin’s wings, and Tate’s fishing boat image.

In addition to this student-centered, collective, indoor mural at OHS, the district will continue to collaborate with the families of Justin, Hana, Tate, and Madisyn in the planning of the community’s permanent memorial.

With hope in continual healing together,
Dacia Beazley
