May 5, Commencement Update

Recently, Oxford High School administration was made aware of a specific desire for students to honor their friends and bring awareness to a cause that is deeply personal to them. Through several thoughtful conversations with parents and students, we would like to restate that the purpose of commencement is to celebrate the academic accomplishments of this most incredible class and launch them into the next phase of their life’s journey.  As such, the awards worn at graduation are those provided by Oxford Community Schools and are GPA or program-based. In consideration of the purpose of commencement, we have established universal criteria to help maintain the decorum and formality of the event.

As our seniors make graduation preparations, we ask that their choices are in keeping with both the solemn and celebratory nature of which commencement is intended.  Our students deserve to be celebrated and we hope all will honor them and the occasion appropriately.

In addition, we would like to inform you that our students initiated a tribute to Tate Myre and Daphne Beethem. The students collaborated with staff and gained approval from Tate and Daphne’s families.  At graduation rehearsal, seniors will have the opportunity to accept a tassel charm with pictures of both students that they may attach to their graduation cap.

We look forward to honoring our students, their accomplishments, and their future success at the Oxford High School 2023 Commencement.

Sincerely,

Dr. Vickie Markavitch Superintendent
