February 4, OHS Update on Student Safety

Dear OHS Families,

This afternoon, Oxford High School received a call that contained a non-specific threat. In following our district safety protocols, we immediately notified law enforcement. Our on-site Oakland County Sheriff’s detective began investigation of the phone call. As we worked in cooperation with the OCSO and other law enforcement across the state, it was determined we could safely remain open this afternoon.

Regrettably, because it is an ongoing investigation, we cannot share all the details of the non-specific threat. To ensure student and staff safety today, we have extra Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies at OHS to support our safety procedures.

Additionally, a student made a verbal threat at OHS today in a joking manner and was sent home in the parent’s custody. This student is currently pending discipline.

We have strong policies and procedures in place to assess threats and we continue to work with law enforcement to make determinations in each situation. Unfortunately, we have learned from other school districts who have experienced mass violence that these types of threats are likely to continue in the near future. Often times it is difficult to identify perpetrators who make anonymous threats and these cases can remain in open investigation status for undetermined periods of time. Please know that despite this, we take every threat seriously.

Parents please speak with your children about the language they use and how it may affect others. We ask that you reinforce with your students the severe consequences that threats of any kind, joking or not, carry.  Threats against the safety of our students and staff are subject to prosecution.
