CONSERVATORY

Oxford Dance Conservatory was launched in the Fall of 2013. It takes place during both 1st & 2nd periods. This program is designed to prepare students for a future in college and professional dance.

Conservatory students are placed in either the intermediate or advanced level by the instructors.  We focus on two of the core dance genres: Ballet and Modern. Students also have the opportunity to study additional styles, such as Jazz, Hip Hop, Ballroom, and Cultural Dances.

Oxford Dance Conservatory provides dance students with skills and knowledge that are often not addressed in dance studios, but that are important for success at the college and professional level.

In addition to honing technique, we study the history and theory of dance. Students are also challenged with tasks that involve creative thinking, teamwork, and problem solving skills--important skills for any student to develop. Opportunities to choreograph and teach are also a component of the curriculum.

Throughout the year, our dancers have the opportunity to perform several times, including performances in which we share the stage with dance majors from Oakland University. These OU students also join us throughout the year, providing master classes to students in our program. This partnership with Oakland University allows our dancers to start networking and learning about dance beyond high school. They are able to begin making decisions regarding which colleges and dance-related careers are right for them.

Students who become part of the Oxford Dance Conservatory are able to take up to 12 hours of dance lessons per week--and at no cost. We are proud to be one of few schools who can provide this program for our students.

COMPANY

The dance company rehearses after school on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-5pm. Though it is open to all conservatory students, only a portion of the conservatory dancers selected to be in the company. The dance company takes part in important performances in addition to those performed by the conservatory members. You must be a dedicated dancer to be part of this company.

Auditions for the dance conservatory take place at the end of each semester. Look for flyers for audition information or contact Mrs. Brewer or Ms. Stavropoulos if you are interested.

MOVEMENT FOR STAGE AND DANCE

This course is open to ALL students. All levels and abilities are welcome. There is absolutely no audition or prerequisites required to join--only the willingness to have fun and learn! In this class you will get a taste of several different styles of dance. The course is designed to give students a basic overview of the world of dance. Students might take the course just to try dance and learn something new, or they might use the class to acquire the skills needed to join conservatory or enhance other arts, especially theater and choir. Mandatory performances are a component of this course.
